which compound is this??
in my chem lab l got this white compound.. It was amorphous. the anion was
sulphate. and cation was either aluminium or magnesium.. l added NaOH and
got a white ppt.. Added NAOH till half the test tube was filled.. The
white ppt persisted.. Which compond is it? l also got an
organic compound.. l added 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazineand got an orange
color. and then l added schiffs reagent and got a pink color. It had a
weird smell. Kinda similar to acetic acid but its not acetic acid. and then l conducted the tollens test and got a black ppt.. so which compound is this?
The first one may be magnesium sulphate - only it is not
amorphous. It should be crystalline unless someone has made a fine powder
of it. The 2nd one is acetaldehyde.
You get a silver mirror or a black ppt on using Tollen is
Reagent for an aldehyde
so, i guess it was an aldehyde.
and the salt was Magnesium Sulphate.
- the first compound is Magnesium sulphate.
- the second compound is ketone ( acetone )
magnesium sulphate
magnesium sulphate
MgSO4
ALsul.
a ketone? not sure :P
